The company said it needed to keep the phone numbers as they were integral to its database. The watchdog dismissed that argument, saying that “one cannot set a deletion deadline which is three years longer than necessary simply because the company’s system makes it difficult to comply with the rules”.

Cristina Angela Gulisano, Denmark’s Data Inspector, said in a statement that the regulator has recommended a fine because “there are very large amounts of personal data that have been stored without a factual purpose”.

“One of the basic principles of the data protection area is that you only have to process information that you need – and when you do not need them anymore, they must be deleted immediately,” she said.
